Why Does My Bra Band Ride Up My Back?

If the back of your bra band arches upward toward your shoulder blades throughout the day instead of sitting level across your ribcage, your bra is not providing proper support.

Quick Answer

A bra band rides up because the band size is too large or the elastic has stretched out over time. When the band is too loose, it cannot anchor against your ribcage, forcing your shoulder straps to pull the back of the bra upward.

Plausible Causes

1. Using the Traditional "+4" Sizing Method

Many older bra fitting charts add 4 inches to your underbust measurement, resulting in a band that is too large to anchor securely around your ribcage.

2. Worn-Out Band Elasticity

Over months of wear and washing, elastane and spandex fibers degrade, loosening the band beyond its original structural capacity.

3. Over-Tightened Shoulder Straps

Attempting to lift your bust by cranking down shoulder straps pulls a loose back band upward toward your neck.

Practical Fit Checks

  • Mirror Check: Stand sideways in front of a mirror. The band should form a completely horizontal straight line around your torso.
  • Two-Finger Rule: You should be able to slide no more than two fingers beneath the band at your back.
  • Hook Fastener Check: A new bra should fit snugly on the outermost hook, allowing you to tighten it as elastic relaxes over time.

Recommended Size Adjustment

To fix a riding-up band, move down one band size. However, to maintain the exact same cup volume capacity, you must simultaneously move up one cup letter letter in your new smaller band size:
